Weird and wacky vehicles, dancers and plenty of free goodies greeted the people of Saffron Walden when the Tour de France caravan made its way through town.

The parade of cars kept the crowds entertained as it arrived about two hours before the Tour’s competitors.

Shortly before 1pm thousands of people went wild as the riders entered Saffron Walden via Windmill Hill, came down High Street, and turned left into George Street, Hill Street and out of town towards Radwinter.

Cabinet member for communities and partnerships at Uttlesford District Council, Councillor Howard Rolfe, told the Reporter: “I thought the day was brilliant. It was an electric atmosphere and crowds packed the district’s roads throughout Uttlesford.

“Saffron Walden looked great, there were plenty of people and all of them seemed to have a good time.”

Cllr Rolfe, who is set to take over as council leader later this month, added: “The whole build up with the caravan beforehand was great and it was interesting to see a race where two people were so far ahead of the peloton.”

Here are two galleries of photos of the caravan.
