A PROPOSAL to build 54 homes and a 60-bed care facility on the old Willis & Gambier factory site in Saffron Walden was presented to members of Saffron Walden Town Council on Tuesday evening.
Representatives involved in the prospective development on Radwinter Road showcased the plan at a full council meeting. Darragh Harnett, land manager for developer Countryside Properties, said the initial proposal was for a 60-bed care home made up of 45 one-bed and 15 two-bed units, along with 54 residential properties. Sixty three per cent would be three-bed homes, 20 per cent four-bed and 17 per cent two-bed, he told councillors.
“We have been consulting with the local authority on bringing forward the best use for this site,” Mr Harnett said. “Clearly the extra care facility and residential use provides both employment and residential elements which makes it a good fit for this development site.”
The care home would be designed for over 55s and include a restaurant, lounge area and meeting rooms.
A proposal is likely to be submitted to planning authority Uttlesford District Council in either June or July.
