POLICE are seeking help from the public after a 24-year-old man was assaulted in Saffron Walden on Saturday night.

The local man, who had been drinking in the town, was beaten up by a group of five young men in Birdbush Avenue between 2.30 and 2.45am.

It is believed there was a verbal dispute which escalated into violence.

The victim suffered bumps and swelling to the top of his head, a fractured nose, swelling to his left cheek, cuts and grazes to his face, elbows and knees, sore ribs and damage to the ligaments in his ankle.

He was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital for treatment for his injuries.

His attackers were all white, had local accents, and were aged in their late teens or early twenties.

One is described as of medium build, clean-shaven, with short curly black hair, and was wearing a black jacket and dark trousers.

The second was around 5ft 6in tall, of fat build, with a shaven head, and was wearing a plain white t-shirt and dark trousers. The third man was also around 5ft 6in tall, of slim build, with cropped dark hair, and was wearing a dark top and dark trousers.

The fourth attacker was around 6ft tall, of medium build, with light-coloured cropped hair, gingery stubble, and was wearing dark trousers and a black hooded top with long tie-strings. The fifth man was also around 6ft tall, with longer dark hair which was spiky all over, and was wearing a striped top.
