KEEPING a closer eye on anti-social behaviour in Saffron Walden has been made easier thanks to the delivery of a new crime-fighting car.

Police officers in the town now have access to a vehicle which is equipped with cameras and recording equipment.

Insp Kevin Wakefield said: "We are looking to use it primarily to reduce further the anti-social behaviour in the town and throughout Uttlesford district.

"I'm very pleased by all the hard work put in by Sgt Mike Ashton and John Starr from Uttlesford District Council in securing the funds to purchase this equipment. It's an excellent result for the district."

The cameras were purchased using a 13,000 grant from the Home Office which was applied for jointly by Saffron Walden Police Station and Uttlesford District Council (UDC).

The main camera which is on the roof of the vehicle can rotate 360 degrees, has a powerful zoom and can resist acts of vandalism. The camera is controlled from within the cabin.

Mr Starr, UDC's drugs and alcohol officer, said he hoped that the vehicle would be used to help reduce the impact of alcohol on the community and make people feel safer.

The vehicle can be used in a variety of roles such as public events or where there are large gatherings of people.

"This brings us into line with the rest of the division," said Insp Wakefield. "Braintree, Malden and Chelmsford have had vehicles like these for a while, so this is great news for Uttlesford.

"The equipment was professionally fitted by Kevin Doo from transport services so we can maximise its potential."

The van will primarily be used in Saffron Walden, but it will also be taken to the surrounding villages when needed.
