SIX-year-old Poppy Pledger, of Saffron Walden, is on course to become the next JK Rowling after beating thousands of entrants to win a national creative writing competition.

The Katherine Semar Infant School pupil entered the Sylvanian Families competition after picking up an entry form in The Toy Box, a toy shop in Saffron Walden.

The competition asked entrants to write a story based around a new Sylvanian Families toy, the Grand Hotel, and Poppy's story was judged to be the best in her age category.

Proud dad Sean Pledger said that Poppy had been overjoyed to learn that she had won the competition: "She was really delighted. The news that she'd won came completely out of the blue; there was a knock at the door, and this big box arrived - it was a Sylvanian Families Grand Hotel.

"Poppy loves the hotel, and now it's arrived she can act out her story with her toys. She's got a fantastic imagination and, who knows, maybe she's destined for a career in writing!"

The Ross Close youngster, who will turn seven in March, impressed the judging panel with her original and inventive story, as judge Lindsay

Hardy explained.

"Poppy's stunning entry stood out as a natural winner in the four to six-year-old category," she said.

"We were really impressed by her delightfully detailed story of the Sylvanian Cat family's visit to the Grand Hotel, which made imaginative use of all the different rooms and the fantastic hotel features.

"We're sure that Poppy will enjoy her prize just as much as the Sylvanian Cat family enjoyed their special weekend away in her story!
