A Saffron Walden doctor has received an award for his contribution to pre-hospital emergency care.
Dr John Eaton, vice-chairman and trustee of the awarding body, BEARS (Basics Essex Accident Rescue Service), was recognised not only for a textbook he wrote for an emergency care course, but also because he ran a busy GP practice.
Dr Ian Gibson, BEARS president, awarded him the prize and described him as an “excellent fundraiser”.
Dr Eaton came to the town in 1977 after leaving the Navy.
Although now semi-retired, he has a colourful career, including giving emergency care at the 2012 Olympics, and he is club doctor for Cambridge RUFC.
John said: “I was delighted, it was a great surprise.
“I think medicine at what I call the sharp end, when people need it most, is important. I have always tried to help.”
