Public inquiry into Sainsbury’s Saffron Walden store bid gets underway

A PUBLIC inquiry into Sainsbury’s bid to bring a new store to Saffron Walden got underway today (Thursday Feb 9).

The supermarket giant is appealing two applications to build on land in Thaxted Road. Sainsbury’s say the store will bring many benefits to the area and create hundreds of jobs.

However, the bid has met considerable resistance - members of campaign group Save Walden Town Centre gathered outside Uttlesford District Council’s offices in London Road prior to the start of the inquiry this morning.

The appeal, which is to discuss both the original application for the large out-of-town superstore – which was rejected by Uttlesford’s planning committee in December 2010 – and a revised application for a 20 per cent smaller store and petrol station, started today at 10am and will continue on: Friday Feb 10; Tues Feb 14; Wed Feb 15; Thurs Feb 16; Fri Feb 17; Mon Feb 20; Tues Feb 21; Wed Feb 22; and Fri Feb 24.
