A GROUP of children got a taste of the ministerial life when they travelled down to the Houses of Parliament to be given a tour by Saffron Walden's MP.

Sir Alan Haselhurst met the group of Year 6 children from Great Sampford Primary School at the Sovereign entrance to Westminster Palace, before showing them around the corridors of power.

School admin officer Belinda Thorogood said: "Sir Alan personally took the 11 children around the Palace of Westminster, following the route that Queen Elizabeth would take on her State Opening of Parliament, starting with the robbing room and through to the House of Lords.

"The children were also shown around the House of Commons and the lobbies where the voting on legislation is carried out.

"All the children found the visit most informative and greatly enjoyed the opportunity to see the Houses of Parliament at close hand."

As well as visiting the political hub of the country, the children got to enjoy a boat ride from Westminster pier to Greenwich.
