CUTTING the speed limit from 40mph to 30mph on a "dangerous" stretch of road has been hailed as a success.

New speed limit signs have recently been installed on a section of the B1383 which runs through the village of Quendon and people are delighted with results.

Chairman of Quendon and Rickling Parish Council, Ray Bedborough, said: "The signs have only been up for about two weeks and we have already noticed a considerable difference.

"Vehicles are driving slower through the village and, as a by product, the noise from the traffic is a lot quieter."

The new speed limit runs from the village hall to Quendon Hall and brings the village into line with Newport, only a mile up the road, which already has a 30mph limit.

The parish council has been campaigning for almost five years to have the changes made to the road and Mr Bedborough has offered some advice to other villages campaigning for reduced speed limits.

"I think it's all about perseverance," he said. "Make it clear to the Highways Agency that you are not giving up on the issue.

"The government has recently published recommendations saying that all village roads should be 30mph, so this should put other parish councils on a stronger footing."

The changes to the section of road, which is about 800m in length, include new signage at both ends of the 30mph zone and repeater signs installed at intervals in between.

It is hoped that in the future a vehicle activated sign will also be installed to warn drivers if they are exceeding the limit.
