RA BUTLER Junior School swept the board at the 2009 Price Bailey Essex Schools' Chess Tournament.

They obtained impressive wins with 31 points by team A and 20.5 points by team B, and also scooped the individual winners and the individual runners up prizes.

Some 78 pupils from nine schools in the Essex region took part in the tournament last Friday (March 27), hosted by Dame Bradbury's School in Saffron Walden.

The participating schools were: Bentfield County Primary School (Stansted); Dame Bradbury's School (Saffron Walden); Friends Junior School (Saffron Walden); Great Easton CE Primary School (Great Easton, Dunmow); R A Butler County Junior School (Saffron Walden); Rodings Primary School (Leaden Roding, Dunmow); St Thomas More R C Primary School (Saffron Walden); Great Bardfield Primary School (Great Bardfield); and Takeley Primary School (Takeley).

Trophies were presented by Melanie Lord on behalf of Price Bailey Chartered Accountants, sponsors of the tournament.

Ms Lord said: "This is our 25th year of sponsoring this event and our congratulations go to the winners. It is so lovely to see so many children enjoying a traditional game in the age of multi media.

"We would also like to sincerely thank the organisers and the schools for their continued support with running a superb competition.
