An exciting mix of musical styles from the worlds of opera, musical theatre and jazz will come together this weekend as professional singers and orchestral musicians unite in support of a worthwhile cause.
The mayor’s Charity Gala Concert will take place on Saturday (2 May) at Saffron Hall in aid of the local St John Ambulance, the chosen charity of Saffron Walden Mayor, Cllr Sandra Eden.
An exciting programme includes popular pieces from Die Fledermaus, Rusalka, Rigoletto, Madame Butterfly, Don Giovanni and Carmen, as well as music theatre and jazz favourites as the concert organisers aim to put on an extravaganza of entertainment for all.
“We have professional singers and beautiful orchestral music, as well as local youngsters all contributing and working together in support of a most terrific cause,” said concert director Sara Shaw.
“A lot of thought has gone into the programme which is full of songs and music that people can relate to. There really is something for everyone.”
Sara, an accomplished soprano who has performed at prestigious venues such as the Royal Albert Hall and Southwark Cathedral, will be taking to the Saffron Hall stage for the first time. The Saffron Walden resident has also called on the talents of Anne Warner (soprano), Michael Wilson (tenor) and Martin Oinn (baritone), the Saffron Walden Symphony Orchestra, singer Leigh McDonald and accompanist Andrew Taylor to help ensure the concert is of the highest quality.
And, to add to the sense of occasion, there will be a special performance by the St John Ambulance cadets.
The young cadets have been coached by Sara and it is through working with them that the project has taken on extra significance.
“The more I have worked with the cadets, the more I have seen what sterling work they do. This is as much about them as anything else,” said Sara, who has a wealth of experience in directing musical productions.
“I have worked with varying age groups but not with people who have never done anything like this before. What I have seen, their improvement over a short space of time and their enthusiasm has really impressed me.
“Their involvement in the concert is fitting and sits nicely alongside the many wonderful singers and musicians who have generously given their time. I would like to thank them all.
“Let’s hope we can raise the profile of St John Ambulance by putting on a fabulous concert. It promises to be a wonderful and exciting evening of entertainment – please do come and support us.”
