Dr Jo Burch, director of the Words in Walden Literary Festivals dropped in on children and parents from Friends’ Junior School to join them for ‘Reading Tea Time’ last Thursday (February 27).
Reading from Jacqueline Wilson’s Four Children and It, Dr Burch took her audience back in time to meet Nesbit’s own Anthea, Jane, Robert and Cyril, helping the Year 5 pupils to compare the writer’s styles, as well as the past with the present.
The second part of the session allowed the children to enjoy some shared reading with their parents, a friend, or Dr Burch herself.
This was the third in a programme of four ‘Reading Tea Times’ at Friends’, which take place after the school day has finished and is based in their new library. The programme is focused on encouraging children to view themselves as readers within a larger community where everyone reads. Pupils are actively encouraged to read both on-screen and on paper with their parents.
The next Reading Tea Time is scheduled for early April and will take place in Friends’ Forest School with drama specialist and professional actor, Chris Whyld.
