Some 3,000 visitors, a record crowd, visited The Saffron Walden Crank Up show, a festival of steam vehicles over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday May 11 and 12 at Just Like Wendy's in Sparrows Hill, Newport.

Highly popular was the exhibition of mobile living including bow top Gypsy waggon. This is the fifth year that the revived event has taken place, organised by The East Anglian Traction Engine Society, which took over the event.

From the 1970s until the early 2000s, enthusiasts flocked to Saffron Walden for the popular Crank Up events organised by Paul Engelmann at his Shire Hill home. Exhibits include steam engines, miniature engines, vintage vehicles and tractors, stationary engines, bygones and a host of other attractions.

Spokesman John Hunt said: "It went very well, this was our best attendance ever with lots of exhibits. Usually people come along have a look around and go but this year stayed longer. For the first time this year, we will be making a donation of £500 to a local good cause."

Next year's Crank Up will be at Carver Barracks over the weekend of April 25/26.
