Steve Walker, 59, was there to support his son, Robert Walker, 20, who joined the regiment nearly two years ago.

“He’s just come back from Afghanistan – he was there for four and a half months. I’m very proud of him – it’s an emotional day. It’s a relief that he’s back, and in one piece. He lives for the army – if he had it his way he’d stay there forever. It was very stressful when he was away, but I’m just glad he’s back.”

Kevin Miller, 35, also from the regiment, was reunited with wife Ruth and daughters, Tiegan, nine, Caileigh, seven, and Chloe, 16.

He said: “This tour was four and a half months long – usually they’re about six to seven months. It’s nice to be back and obviously to spend time with my family. It’s a relief to know we are not going back there.

“The first few weeks I’m away the kids find it difficult, and then they get used to it - they get into a routine. We always have internet there so I’m always talking to them on Skype and on Facebook.”
