A campaign set up to raise funds to get a Saffron Walden boy with cerebral palsy walking independently has received a share of a community bursary from a housing developer.

CALA Homes, a UK home builder which has run its community bursary scheme for a second year, announced that Run Ronnie Run and Newport Toddler Group were among the recipients of its £10,000 bursary scheme in Essex.

The scheme aims to provide support for a wide range of local charities, schools and good causes.

Run Ronnie Run, the campaign launched by the parents of three-year-old Ronnie Leys, raises funds for an operation to help him walk and rehabilitation and has raised more than £45,000 so far. More than £15,000 of the total came from a charity football match in May which featured celebrities such as Danny Dyer.

A total of four initiatives in Essex have been selected to receive funding, helping them to continue the vital work they do within the community. Successful applicants include a wide range of community support groups.

Duncan Jackson, regional managing director for CALA Homes, said: “We were overwhelmed by the response to this year’s community bursary and the fantastic work that is being carried out across Essex.

“Due to the sheer number and calibre of entries, the selection process was particularly tough but we are confident that the organisations selected will be able to use the funds to make a real difference in the work they do.

“We would like to thank everyone who took the time to apply and congratulate them on the significant contribution they are making to the local community.”

CALA said it is committed to making a positive and lasting contribution to the communities in which it builds, through an active programme of local charity donations, community support and sponsorship. In 2018, the community bursary scheme will grant more than £100,000 in funding to 110 good causes across the UK.

The other recipients of the grant in Essex were Isabella’s Wish to Walk and the Friends of Colchester Volunteer Police Cadets.
