FORGING tighter links between a primary school and the Royal British Legion was the aim of an end-of-term service last week.

Members of the Debden branch of the RBL paid a visit to the village’s primary school to present two certificates at Debden Parish Church. Deputy headteacher Valerie Mitchell, who has retired after 14 years at Debden Primary School, was awarded a ‘Friend of the Legion’ certificate as a mark of gratitude by Michael Barton, president of Debden RBL.

For the last 10 years, Mrs Marshall has been responsible for the attendance of the senior children at the annual RBL Act of Remembrance at the village hall War Memorial on November 11. The children place crosses at the base of the memorial to remember each of the village parishioners who fell in the two world wars.

Headteacher Julie Gibbons was also presented with an official Royal British Legion Affiliation certificate by Colonel (Retd) Roger Burgess, chairman of the Debden branch. This formalised the already close links that exist between Debden Primary School and the local RBL branch.
