The conversion of Saffron Walden’s Victorian almshouses in Freshwell Street into four flats has won an award.

Representatives of Saffron Walden Almshouse Association received an Almshouse Association Patron’s Award at a ceremony at The Mercers’ Hall in the City of London.

A certificate and a bronze plaque were presented by The Duke of Gloucester, on behalf of Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales.

The honour was conferred for “an outstanding almshouse development”. The Grade II listed building was converted from a place with shared staircases and no facilities for people with disabilities into four homes suitable for 21st century living including two ground floor flats suitable for less mobile residents.
