BELLRINGERS have donated £150 to a children’s hospice charity thanks to a Christmas fundraising drive.

Members of the Saffron Walden Society of Change Ringers presented a cheque to Melissa Collett, north Essex fundraiser for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH), in the bell tower of St Mary’s Church on Tuesday (February 5).

Treasurer of the society Hugh Maddams said members helped raise the cash by choosing to donate to the charity instead of sending Christmas cards. The bellringers also had a stall at the late night shopping event in the town before Christmas and the final amount was topped up by funds from the society.

EACH support families and care for children and young people with life-threatening conditions across Cambridgeshire and Essex.

Ms Collett said: “It is fantastic to receive this amount of money, which will be spent on the care children receive in hospices or in their own home. This is the first time the society has supported us and it is great to have them on board. We hope to continue working with them in the future.”
