A BLOOD donor from Saffron Walden has been honoured for reaching a remarkable milestone.

Ken Bowers rolled up his sleeve to donate blood for the 75th time for NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) on Wednesday. And he also accepted his 75th cup of tea from local volunteer Marjorie Reid, who has been serving tea and biscuits and helping at the session for over 30 years.

Retired oil terminal control room supervisor Mr Bowers first started donating back in the early 70s.

He said: “At the time I was a counter clerk at the Saffron Walden Post Office and as one of my colleagues donated blood regularly I thought I’d give it a try.

“I’ve never really been one to give to charity so I thought this was a worthwhile way of giving something back to the community. I’ve even persuaded my wife and two sons to donate.”

Mr Bowers was also delighted that 84-year-old volunteer Marjorie Reid from Sewards End was there to present his award, as well as his usual cup of tea. Mrs Reid started helping NHSBT in 1963 by writing the invitation letters out to local donors.

She is currently the local organiser and refreshment helper at the Saffron Walden sessions.

She said: “It’s really friendly at the sessions and everyone has an opportunity to sit and chat over a cup of tea after they’ve made their donation.”
