WEIGHT limits on two bridges in Saffron Walden will be significantly reduced, potentially causing problems for large vehicles.
The railway bridges on Debden Road and South Road currently have 22-tonne weight limits, but these have been reassessed following an inspection by a structural engineer.
The bridge on Debden Road could be reduced to a 7.5-tonne limit and the South Road bridge dropped to three tonnes.
At a meeting of Saffron Walden Town Council last Wednesday, Cllr Keith Eden, raised concerns that vehicles such as double decker buses and heavy furniture lorries would be prevented from using the roads.
He questioned why Essex County Council had not insisted that the bridges be maintained to their original limit by British Rail, the bridge owners.
It was agreed that the Town Clerk should investigate the matter further.
