The reinvigorated Saffron Walden Crank Up returns to Newport next weekend.

After the successful revival of the much-loved event last year, steam enthusiasts will again descend on Sparrows Hill on Saturday and Sunday, May 7-8.

Between the 1970s and early 2000s, the Crank Up used to be held as organiser Paul Engelmann’s Shire Hill home in Saffron Walden but last year, for the first time, the East Anglian Traction Engine Society brought the event back to life and attracted thousands of visitors.

This year’s Crank Up will showcase huge steam traction engines, miniature engines, vintage vehicles and tractors, stationary engines, bygones and more.

There will also be demonstrations in baling and sawing by steam as well as fairground organ music, a beer tent, hot and cold refreshments, traditions children’s funfair, craft tents and trade stands.

Michael Pumphrey said: “The Crank Up was always well regarded for its friendly, relaxed atmosphere and the large variety in exhibits and this event carries on that tradition.”

The Crank Up, next to Just Like Wendy’s, runs 10am to 5pm both days. Tickets £5 per adult and children under 16 free.
