Peter, of Saffron Walden, was ill with pneumonia when he was advised to lose weight and spend time in the gym. Since that warning five years ago Peter, 42, has shed four stones in weight.

And the new lease of life has seen the Hitchin-based National Grid manager take part in four charity challenges. But this year he faces his toughest test so far – tackling his first triathlon.

The father-of-four has to swim 300 metres, cycle for 22 kilometres and then run four kilometres in this Sunday’s (May 18) Newmarket Triathlon.

His Herculean efforts will all be in a good cause as he aims to raise over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support.

He said: “I set myself a new challenge for charity every year. Last year I completed the Cambridge half-marathon so this year I was looking for something a little easier. But where’s the challenge in that so I went for the triathlon!

“Five years ago I was a heart attack waiting to happen. Now I’m enjoying life, keeping fit and helping others.”

Macmillan was voted by National Grid employees as the company’s chosen charity in September 2013. National Grid is aiming to raise £500,000 over the next two years to provide 2,500 emergency fuel grants to people who are suffering with cancer. The company has pledged to add to Peter’s fundraising pot as he strives to hit his target.

Peter said: “It’s a really worthwhile cause and the Macmillan staff do a fantastic job supporting people. One in three of us will get cancer and it’s the toughest thing most of us will ever face.

“Each day 889 people receive the news that they have cancer and this affects everyone who loves them. No one should face cancer alone and with Macmillan support no one will have to.”

Peter will be competing with 150 other triathletes in the sell-out event at the Newmarket Leisure Centre. His wife Sue and their four children will be cheering him on from the sidelines.

Macmillan improves the lives of people affected by cancer by providing practical, medical and financial support.
