Daniel Neville, 27, Craig McColl, 31, and Nik Capon, 40, of Saffron Walden, have been inspired by their friend, who has been suffering from cancer since the age of 13, and have been training hard in preparation.

They aim to raise £10,000 to donate to the teenage cancer ward at Addenbrookes Hospital, Cambridge.

Mr Neville said: “I actually started coming to work by bike, which is about a 34 mile round trip.

“Craig and I have lost about four stone between the two of us. It’s just making sure we get there and we are planning to raise as much as we can.”

The trio plan to ride a thousand miles covering roughly a hundred miles a day, leaving Lands End on Monday, June 29, and arriving at John o’ Groats in Scotland on Wednesday, July 8.

They will be accompanied by their driver, Neil Sault, who will follow the ride in a back up vehicle.

Mr Neville added: “We are getting quite nervous and twitchy and wanting to go now.

“We can’t do anymore training. The only thing we are worried about is how our bums are going to feel at the end.”

The plan to attempt the “long way up” began in November 2014 and the three started training with the help of Wilburs gym, Saffron Walden, at the end of December.
