A Hands off, it’s Mine campaign has been launched in Saffron Walden by market trader Jacqui Portman and colleagues after several instances of bag snatches in the town.

Jacqui, who has the Country Collectables stall in the market, said: “One elderly woman had her purse snatched. She had no money and no bus pass so she wouldn’t even have been able to get home if people hadn’t gone to help her. she was crying and desolate.”

“People need to keep their bags tightly under their arm and possibly put their bank cards and their phones in an inside pocket in their coats. Thieves are even more active in crowded places at Christmas time.”
