SAFFRON Walden Town Hall rocked to the funky sounds of electronic keyboards and base guitars when Godspell played to near-sell-out performances.

The town's Music Theatre Company youth group played to 90 per cent capacity throughout the week, when it presented the cult '70s rock musical by Stephen Schwartz. Directed by Sarah Clark, Godspell featured a cast of nearly 40 11-18 year-olds from the area. They rocked their way through such famous numbers as 'Day by Day' and 'Prepare Ye the way of the Lord'.

In a towering performance, Saffron Walden County High School sixth-former Jack Richardson took on the role of Jesus - taking the part that originally made a star of '70s pop icon David Essex. He dominated the stage with the maturity of his singing and the subtlety of his acting. Richardson's Jesus was charismatic, sensitive, and mischievous - but at the same time innocent and gentle.

Richardson received good support from an energetic ensemble. James Hedges - as John the Baptist and Judas - combined a strong singing voice with a brooding presence, culminating in the heart-breaking betrayal that comes at the climax of the show.

In production bursting with talent and star-quality, Beth Rowe, Danielle Cross, and Alison Cowling also shown with the quality of their singing and their stage presence.

The company's next show is already scheduled for November 2010 - in its new autumn slot. Youngsters who are keen to take part in future productions should contact SWMTC Youth Group chairman, Fiona Wilson Waterworth, on 07799 628977, or check out the company's website www.swaos.co.uk
