A DENTAL nurse and her daughter are getting their teeth into a humanitarian project in the Congo.

Jan Flitcroft, who works at the Courtyard Dental Practice in East Street, and Sian, a Saffron Walden County High School pupil, flew out to the war-torn African country in the early hours of this morning (Thursday).

There, they will help renovate and furnish a resource centre for a school. A container with supplies including books, computers, desks and chairs, is already at the facility in Kinshasa.

Now Jan and Sian will join seven other volunteers, spending the next three weeks helping to get the centre up and running.

Jan, who will also give oral hygiene lessons to the native children, said: "This will be a brilliant experience and we're both excited and nervous.

"We're there to unload the container, paint the resource centre and then help deck it out with furniture."

The pair, who have funded the trip themselves, will be staying in a complex near the school alongside teachers, homeless women and humanitarian aid workers.

"There will be no showers or baths, one WC and we're taking our own sleeping bags, so it will be nothing like we've ever experienced before. But it's only for three weeks and we'll be looking to make some life changes when we get back," said Jan.

An added bonus of the trip for Jan is the time she will get to spend with her daughter.

"Sian has had a tough year so this will be really good for us. She is the youngest member of the group and I'm really very proud of her," she said.
