Members of the public could be sorely inconvenienced when the town’s toilets close for over a month for refurbishment.

The Hill Street facilities will close for approximately five weeks during the refurbishment, which begins next Wednesday, April 22.

Expected to cost around £120,000, the work is being undertaken by Uttlesford District Council, before responsibility for the toilets is transferred to Saffron Walden Town Council (SWTC).

The cubicles were the subject of prolonged debate when the town council reviewed its initial decision, made last August, to take them over from UDC - but in February SWTC decided to press forward with the takeover.

For the duration of the work, the public is able to use the toilets at Saffron Walden Town Hall, which will be open from 8am-5pm, Monday to Saturday. Access to the facilities is via Butchers Row to the rear of the Town Hall.
