Green-fingered pupils in Saffron Walden have helped their school pick up the Royal Horticultural Society’s top award.
Dame Bradbury’s has been awarded RHS Level 5 in recognition of what the children, teachers and helpers have achieved in gardening lessons and gardening club at the school.
Liz Bicknell, gardening and Forest School subject leader, led a special assembly attended by Mark Ropner, head gardener from Bridge End Garden in Saffron Walden, who presented the awards to the children and congratulated them on this huge achievement.
As part of the award, the school received garden centre vouchers which have been spent on new ‘child-sized’ gardening tools for use in the school’s Teaching Garden.
To celebrate the award, two children from each form in the Prep School have planted potatoes on behalf of their form. The ‘rocket’ variety of potatoes are particularly fast-growing and will be harvested after Easter and cooked for lunch so that all the children can enjoy them.
