A WEEK of charitable activities at Friends' School in Saffron Walden has raised more than 1500 to help people in Haiti.

Students had a busy yet rewarding week with a different fundraising event planned for each day and an opportunity for all pupils to be involved.

Haiti ribbons, made by pupils in a design technology class, went on sale on Monday and Year 7 held a special school assembly highlighting Haiti's plight on Tuesday.

The week continued with a sponsored swim organised by Year 11 pupil, Alice Irwin, and a chance to sign the Christian Aid petition - Drop Haiti's Dept.

Friday saw students don the colours of the Haitian flag and wear red tops with blue jeans for a non-uniform day, run a cake sale and perform a mini concert at lunchtime.

Throughout the week a wishing well, made by Friends' School boarders during their weekend activities, was placed around the school in various locations for donations of loose change from pupils, parents and staff.

To help add to the school's total, Year 9 student Fergus Quill spent Saturday in Saffron Walden with his guitar busking to shoppers and raised 30.

Head of Friends' School, Graham Wigley, said: "It was heartening to see the students' generous response to those who are facing such difficult circumstances. We hope the amount raised goes a little way to help those suffering in Haiti.
