THE Saffron Walden Skate Group has announced that it has smashed through the £400,000 fundraising barrier - in just its third summer.
In addition to building the main skatepark, the group - which is made up of a small band of voluntary members - has added a mini-skatepark for its younger members, floodlighting, seating areas for spectators, an innovative sail shelter, numerous paths and attractive landscaping.
To date funding has come from 42 different national and local grant-making bodies, while donations have been received from local people, businesses and local charities.
A group spokesman said: "Money has also been raised by skaters taking part in fundraising activities such as a fete with the elderly residents at Elm Grove, late-night Christmas shopping, a film screening of videos made by local skaters, discos and sponsored events and good old-fashioned bucket shaking.
"The young people on the committee are constantly coming up with new and creative ways to raise money to fund further projects at the skatepark.
"This is our third summer and the skatepark is more popular than ever - it has been a massive hit with young and old, skaters and spectators.
