Hundreds of people lined the streets of Saffron Walden on Friday (December 2) to see Santa and his elves switch on the town’s Christmas lights.

Residents were treated to a mixture of live entertainment throughout the afternoon, including singers, dancers and musicians on the stage in the Market Square.

Stilt walkers, choirs and acapella singers also popped up around the town as people got well and truly into the Christmas spirit with late-night shopping available to those who wanted to hit the stores.

Father Christmas and his elves arrived to switch on the lights at 6pm, accompanied by the Mayor of Saffron Walden Councillor Sarfraz Anjum.

Lisa Courtney, town clerk, said: “The entertainment throughout the afternoon and evening was incredible, with lots of new and up and coming talent performing live on stage.

“I would like to thank everyone involved in helping out both behind the scenes and on the day. Special thanks must to go Jacqui Portway and Peter Riding from the SW Initiative for organising the charity stalls and entertainment along with thanks to all of the town council staff who helped to make the event such a success.

“Also, a huge thanks to the staff at the Tourist Information Centre who helped to promote and support the event.”
