Students from Friends’ School Saffron Walden were given the opportunity to see the Large Hadron Collider last week on their visit to Geneva.
The sixth form scientists travelled to CERN to see the most powerful particle accelerator ever built and also took in a tour of the United Nations headquarters.
While at CERN they were taken on an underground tour of one of the experiments as the upgrade work on the magnets is allowing more visitors into the tunnels.
After a descent to 100 metres below ground the science students were able to investigate the old decommissioned DELPHI experiment and the magnificent LHCb experiment.
Genevieve Millard, organiser and physics teacher at Friends’ School, said: “The scale of the detectors was astonishing and our tour guide, Dr Zhongliang Ren was superb.
“Our tour of the UN Headquarters was equally inspiring and the students impressed our guide with their knowledge about the Human Rights Council and other agencies within the UN.”
