A soul singer who learnt his craft in the town was recognised at the Brit Awards last night (Wednesday).

Sam Smith, 22, who has won international recognition for his powerful, evocative songs about unrequited love, was taught for years by Saffron Walden jazz sensation Joanna Eden, who lives on Gold Street.

At the Awards ceremony the singer, who grew up in Great Chishill, scooped best British Breakthrough Act and the Global Success Award.

The achievements conclude a phenomenal Feburary for the singer, who won four Grammys earlier this month.
