The secretary of Saffron Walden Town Football Club says he has been “moved by the generosity of people” following an appeal to raise money for floodlight improvements at Catons Lane.
Jonathan Scripps said the club is “well on its way” to achieving its fundraising target of £7,000 to pay for work on the floodlights, which failed an inspection last month.
The club has been warned that failure to make the improvements before the end of this month could lead to the team being demoted two divisions.
A ‘pay what you want’ appeal took place on Saturday for the Bloods’ home game against Kirkley, and 211 people witnessed a 3-1 win for the hosts.
Mr Scripps said: “It has been quite nerve-wracking, but I feel more confident after Saturday. A lot of people were very generous on the gate and along with a couple of large anonymous donations, we’re well on the way.
“I’d say we’re about three quarters of the way there but there is still work to be done.
“I’ve been moved by the generosity of people in giving donations and the offers of help we have received. I think this shows it is a worthwhile cause.”
A crowdfunding page has been set up to aid the fundraising and anyone wishing to donate can click here.
