Saffron Walden woman knits blankets for homeless
PUBLISHED: 08:00 23 October 2016
A selfless woman from Saffron Walden has hand-knitted 14 blankets which she gave to the homeless last week (October 14).
Sonia Gordon used sewing, crocheting and knitting to make the quilts which also fold up into bags – to be practical for people on the move.
The idea came to Sonia in March when she saw a homeless man at night who looked “frozen, like he was going to get hyperthermia”, and so she put an advert in the paper requesting wool donations.
From this she received an overwhelming response, enough for just over 14 blankets, but out of all her designs the union jack is her favourite.
Sonia will take them to Jimmy’s Night Shelter in Cambridge to be distributed there.
She said: “Thank you to everybody who sent wool. I have sewed them up and some of them I have even been able to do so that they have an extra pocket in the bag.”
