WORK on a world class auditorium in Saffron Walden is to start in July after a bid to build it was won this week.

Construction firm ISG Jackson has been chosen to construct the 7.9m project at the County High School.

Occupying the site of the existing school hall building, which will be demolished as part of the development, the high specification auditorium will be used for plays, concerts and events by both the school and the local community.

The auditorium has been designed to be flexible, with a retractable seating area and a sunken orchestra pit that can be covered over.

ISG Jackson will extend the existing sixth form accommodation and facilities. The main entrance to the school will also be remodelled to improve accessibility and provide an entrance to the auditorium outside of school hours. The project is expected to be complete for spring 2013.
