A sixth form student at Saffron Walden County High has made the most of the summer holidays by winning a European sporting champion title.

Khai Mhlanga, 17, travelled to Grosseto, in Italy, to represent Great Britain in the European U20 Championships where she won the 800m in just two minutes and six seconds.

The youngster’s success follows her record-breaking race at the English Schools competition in July – a track she ran in an impressive two minutes and four minutes.

As recently as August, Khai also took part in the Manchester International event winning the 800m in two minutes and 11 seconds – beating GB international Hannah England.

In all, Khai has posted the fastest U20 junior time in the UK this season.

The sixth former said she is looking forward to getting back into her studies and beginning her winter training programme for the 2018 track season.
