NEWPORT Explorers' Violet team were among the winners at one of the district's biggest scout events in the village.

A 24-hour test of survival, entitled Jailbreak, saw the youngsters have to avoid capture by scout leaders and rustle up their own food.

More than 100 scouts and explorer scouts took part and First Saffron Walden Scouts A team came third in the main event.

Organiser Kevin Rule said: "Half the district and 40 other leaders, parents and ex-scouts took part in a great weekend of chases and hiking.

"The aim of the event was for the scouts to leave from the start location at Newport at midday on Saturday and get back to the end base at Fyfield at midday on Sunday.

"They had to avoid the leaders who were on motorcycles and in cars, co-ordinating their efforts via radio to try and catch them."

Anybody interested in joining the scouts should call Mr Rule on 01799 501462.
