The installation of a foul sewer connection will close part of Thaxted Road for the next three weeks and cause traffic problems in Saffron Walden.

The sewage works, which began on October 24, will see the road closed between Prospect Place and Harris Yard until November 14.

Essex Highways have said the alternative route will be via Peaslands Road, Mount Pleasant Road, Borough Lane, B1052, B184 and vice versa.

Many residents have already voiced concerns about the diversion route on Peaslands Road and Mount Pleasant Road, where street parking effectively turns the roads into a single lane.

Colin G, commenting on the community social media network Streetlife, said: “I used South Road and Mount Pleasant Road late morning to avoid the long queue at Memorial and it was virtually single lane and queuing all the way to the lights. It will be hell when the school goes back.”

Daniel V, also speaking on Streetlife, said: “Perhaps it would have been an idea to suspend parking on Peaslands Road and Mount Pleasant Road during the diversion. The extra traffic on a road that is effectively single lane at points probably will not be good.”
