A CAMPAIGN to encourage people to shop locally has been launched by Saffron Walden's mayor.
Posters will be put up around the town promoting the many small and independent retailers.
Town mayor, Cllr Mike Hibbs, said: "Hopefully the posters will make people stop and think about where they do their shopping.
"It is easy to get in the car and buy everything from a supermarket, but the small shops are what makes Saffron Walden special and if people don't use them they will disappear."
Owner of Chisnall's Delicatessen, Chris Chisnall, endorsed the campaign. He said: "Next year we will celebrate our 50th year in the town and we would like to stay for a lot longer. My shop makes me a living but also serves the community. If shops like mine can't survive then people will end up with no choice."
Originally a greengrocer, Chisnall's was started by Chris's father in October 1959 in Market Hill. They moved to their current location in Market Walk almost eight years ago.
"We know we don't have a given right to customers but we do need the support of the community," added Mr Chisnall. "I would encourage everybody to get behind the mayor's campaign.
