A SAFFRON Walden student has been rewarded for her efforts and talent after winning a short story competition.

Katie Rushton, in Year 8 at Friends’ School, entered the competition run by Bishop’s Stortford College Festival of Literature and attended the awards ceremony during the half term break.

Each entry had to be no more than 500 words with the title Another place, Another time and had to contain the words ‘If there was an answer, he’d find it there’. In the 11-15 year old category Katie was announced the winner with judge, author Pauline Francis, commenting on her suspenseful story and twist ending.

Katie, a keen English student, was thrilled with her win and to receive her certificate, book tokens and choice of Pauline Francis novel. She said: “I was astonished that I won as there were a lot of entries from people older than me. I enjoyed the challenge of the title and the chance to write for a competition.”
