A current affairs quiz, a mock press conference and the chance to meet a working reporter were on the agenda during a journalism careers seminar for sixth formers in Newport last week.
Held at the National Council for the Training of Journalists’ (NCTJ) headquarters in Station Road, the event was attended by pupils from Saffron Walden County High School, Joyce Frankland Academy, Herts and Essex High School, Bishop’s Stortford High School and Birchwood High School.
Attendees were given advice on qualifications and training courses and heard how stories are chosen by media outlets for different audiences.
The Saffron Walden Reporter’s Michael Steward told students that although the newspaper industry had been affected by the explosion of new media, there were still jobs available for young journalists who showed dedication and determination.
