SPAR, the UK convenience store chain, has opened its latest outlet at Stansted Airport. Located in the international arrivals area in the main terminal building, the store opened on Thursday and is the first of its kind to open in a BAA airport.

The store completes the upgrade of the arrivals area and further strengthens the already successful retail mix at the airport according to airport bosses.

"We're seeing a strong retail performance at Stansted, contrary to the current High Street trend," said Stansted's Head of Retail, John English.

"By mid October all our units will be let and many of our retailers are reporting better trading here than at their High Street stores."

The new store is equipped with the latest energy efficient refrigeration and motion sensor lighting while all its waste will be returned to the company's distribution depot for recycling. It has also stopped issuing free carrier bags, reducing usage by 70 per cent.

Stansted's Commercial and Development Director, Nick Barton, officially opened the new store on Thursday morning, assisted by SPAR's Retail Operations Director, Stuart Adkin.
