Students and staff at Joyce Frankland Academy, Newport, took part in National Anti-Bullying Alliance Week from November 14 to 18.
A team of students from all years, led by year 11 anti-bullying prefects, was put together by assistant principal Lauren Woods.
Their challenge was to spread awareness of anti-bullying using the 2016 slogan Power For Good. There were posters displayed around the school, activities and assemblies and drop in sessions for people affected by bullying - which will now be continued. These were held at lunchtimes with tea and biscuits.
There was also a discussion on the danger of “banter” becoming bullying. As a finale for the week, the team decided to promote the theme: “wear something blue for anti-bullying.” The principal, Gordon Farquhar, agreed to relax the make-up and nail varnish rules, providing it was blue. Some students came fully dressed in blue, complete with blue face paint.
Ms Woods said: “All in all, the combination of awareness activities led to some excellent discussions with students of all ages taking part. The week was a real success.”
