A STUDENT exchange programme involving Newport Free Grammar School (NFG) pupils has taken on a culinary theme.
Two teachers and seven Year 8 students from a school in the Basque country, Spain, paid a visit to the Essex school and cooked up a storm for their hosts – well, a quintessential English afternoon tea anyway. The feast included scones and cream, egg and cress sandwiches and Victoria sponge.
NFG has an existing network of links with schools across Europe and this latest initiative, to create a ‘virtual Euro city’, has seen it forge links with schools in Spain, France and Holland – the schools will continue to host exchanges with each other.
NFG history teacher, Graham Hesketh, who co-ordinates the exchange, said: “Newport Free Grammar is very much a modern foreign language specialist and this event is about promoting European-ness.
“At the same time, we are making lifelong friends and it has been quite an experience for all the students involved. As a first exchange I am delighted.”
