A children’s assault course, inspired by a seven-year-old Saffron Walden boy who has beaten Leukaemia, will take place at Great Chesterford Community Centre on Sunday, October 4.

Maximus’ Military Run is named after Maximus Rowlandson, who was diagnosed with the bone marrow cancer aged just two and a half, and in August he celebrated two years since the end of treatment.

All money raised from the event will go directly towards ward C2/PDU (children’s cancer and tumour ward) at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge, who cared for Max during his chemotherapy.

Entry for the event is £2, but participants are being encouraged to gain sponsorship from family and friends, with an Amazon Fire HD 7 tablet up for grabs for the child who raises the most.

The assault course will be split into three different age groups, with the four to seven year-olds beginning at 1.30pm, eight to 11s going off at 2.20pm and the 12-16-year-olds starting at 3.30pm and the children will be set off in waves over the hour.

Max’s mum and co-organiser, Jodie Rowlandson, said: “Since completing his treatment, Max has grabbed every opportunity to compete in challenges that were once denied to him, and would like other children to join him in this event.

“We hope this fundraising can help other children to celebrate end of treatment milestones.”

Entry forms are available from Saffron Walden tourist information or from Jodie at jodiekegg@hotmail.com/07796 952007.

The children’s assault course will form part of Max’s weekender, which will feature of wide variety of fundraising events for ward C2. Further information will follow in the Reporter in the coming weeks.
