PUPILS from local primary schools gathered at Newport Primary for a morning of science activities designed to enthuse and challenge talented Year 5 and 6 pupils.

Led by Newport's science co-ordinator and Year 6 teacher, Dawn Kitchener, the 21 children from Newport, Chrishall, Great Chesterford, Debden, Wimbish, Elsenham and Rickling schools experimented on one another to investigate muscles and nervous systems.

They then extracted DNA from kiwi fruit and rounded off the morning by making representations of the DNA double helix using jelly babies, beads or coloured paper.
