A TEENAGER was airlifted to hospital yesterday after being hurt while banger racing in Henham.

The 13-year-old girl was driving one of the cars taking part in the race when she was involved in a head-on collision with another car, at about 3.50pm on Sunday.

Initially, an ambulance and a paramedic manager were sent

to the scene, Henham Race Track at Love Coates Farm in Chickney Road.

They were later being backed up by the Essex Air Ambulance.

Operations Manager Bob Mearns said: "We were told that the 13-year-old girl from Braintree was injured in a head-on collision.

"She was suffering from concussion and was complaining of neck and back pain.

"Due to her condition we called in the air ambulance as it is quite a distance to hospital and is smoother in the air for someone with this type of injury.

"While we awaited its arrival we made sure she was fully immobilised using a neck collar and spinal board."

The girl was taken to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.

Mr Mearns said: "She is fortunate not to have sustained more serious injuries.
