AROUND 500 people filled St Mary’s church for a talk from Eamon Duffy, Professor of the History of Christianity at Cambridge University.

Professor Duffy talked on the King James bible, 1611 to 2011 – the Authorised Version and its Impact to mark this year’s 400th anniversary.

He presented the argument that this magnificent translation from the Hebrew and Greek into English is a masterpiece of literature but to concentrate only on its literary brilliance is to devalue the work of its translators whose sole aim was to convey the saving truth of bible to the ordinary people of England.

The talk was the first in a series of events programmed through the year to celebrate the 400 year anniversary of this remarkable publication.

The talk is available to listen again via the church website: stmaryssaffronwalden.org
