A HAT-TRICK was completed by the First Saffron Walden Scout Troop when they won the Columbus Trophy last week.

Their success means they are officially still the best campers in the county.

The Columbus Trophy is for older and more experienced Scouts and leaders are not allowed to help their troop on the day.

Points are awarded to the Scouts for setting up their camp site and for dismantling it, as well as for a three-course lunch and a two-course dinner which were sampled by the judges.

Troop leader Kevin Rule said: "They performed superbly without any help at all and it shows all the training over the years has paid off.

"After winning it for the last two years, we were very happy indeed to be able to retain it for another year and this shows the ambitious nature we have in our troop."

Assistant county commissioner for Scouts, Paul Hole, said: "The teams were all very good and ambitious, especially with their food, which showed great preparation and a good presentation of the table, but Saffron Walden were the best.

"All of the camp sites were also very impressive and the camping standards on show were very high indeed.
